You might just have found a new way to enjoy your favourite TV, games and films. Better yet, because they’re small, light and relatively cheap, you won’t mind lugging them around. Given decent weather, you can even use them outdoors in the summer. You can use them with a big screen in the living room or pair them with a portable screen when you take them away on holiday. With battery-powered operation, built-in speakers and lamps that last for tens of thousands of hours, these portable projectors are perfect for take-anywhere entertainment. You can now buy a projector the size of a Rubik’s cube or smartphone. But a few years ago the combination of small, high-quality DLP chips and energy-efficient LED lamps made it possible to build projectors the size of a hardback book or even smaller. They used to be massive things, ran hot, were power-hungry and needed a chunky stand or coffee table to sit on – if not a dedicated home cinema room. This means the projector does not have to be as far from the screen to create a large, cinematic image, and they can be stowed away in the cupboard again once you're done with your viewing. In case you haven’t noticed, projectors have got a lot smaller. They are only slightly smaller than some normal home projectors but have built-in speakers and other convenient features such as short-throw lenses. Right at the top of the tree are projectors that blur the divide between normal and portable designs. They offer a decent compromise of portability and performance, and will likely have the better software extras, as these are real lifestyle tech buys. The newer “lunchbox” style projector is a better fit for many, though. There’s a pick so small you could fit it in some large coat pockets. This is one reason why our best portable projector round-up includes almost all flavours in this category. No micro projector works well during the day or with the curtains open either. If a projector fits in the palm of your hand, it will not be particularly bright nor kick out top notch detail. There’s no magic, brand-new tech in the lower-end of the portable world, of course. Traditional projector lamps tend to last 2000-3000 hours. And that means a bigger, brighter picture and no more worrying about having to replace the lamp after a year or so. Today’s portable projectors benefit from improvements to LED and laser light tech. 'Pico' projectors had dim light sources that couldn't do justice to colours or contrast, even in a darkened room. Some have kick-stands to help and almost all have tripod attachments.Ī few years ago, these mini projectors were still hard to recommend despite their convenience. Installing a portable projector is no more complicated than finding a flat surface or even a sheet hung in the garden and pointing the thing at it (though a dedicated screen is so much better). Read the full Anker Nebula Solar Portable review. It's small, convenient and very well appointed. ![]() The onboard speakers are a touch weedy but the quality and spread of sound from them is good.ĭo be warned that the app platform is missing a few of the UK catch-up services, iPlayer included, but otherwise, this feels like one of the best projectors out there for taking on your travels. In the right setting, it's just the ticket. There are brighter machines out there but, for this price, there's a great blend of both punch and subtlety to the image. What tops it off, though, is some really rather impressive picture quality. There's an excellent smart platform, a three-hour battery life, a good degree of brightness and plenty of source material options. Feature-wise, it's got almost everything one could need in an outdoor/portable projector. This is Anker's best Nebula projector to date and also a very, very good portable in its own right.

Initially Rita has more enthusiasm for the subject than understanding, but she makes good progress, and is eventually able to discuss literature on equal terms with Frank's college students. This comes across in the scene where she rushes to tell him of her excitement at seeing a production of "Macbeth" or the one where he introduces her to Blake. Despite their differences, Rita and Frank become friends, probably because he retains just enough idealism to be touched by her naive enthusiasm. Although he still earns a living from teaching literature, he has lost his enthusiasm for the subject. He turns up drunk to lectures and mocks his students and the university authorities. (She is having an affair with one of his colleagues). He gave up writing poetry after the breakdown of his marriage and his relationship with his girlfriend Julia is also collapsing. In his youth, when he was a published poet, he doubtless shared her ideals, but now in middle age he is a bored, cynical alcoholic. ![]() The irony of the film is that Frank possesses what Rita most earnestly desires- learning and culture- but does not appreciate it. In doing so, however, she comes into conflict with her working-class family, who have no sympathy with her intellectual aspirations, and her cheerfully Philistine husband Denny, whose only desire is to start raising a family. As she puts it, she "wants to sing a better song". She wants to study literature as a means of self-realisation and as a way of getting a wider perspective on the world. She has not enrolled in higher education in her mid-twenties to earn more money or to get a better job, but rather because she believes in education for its own sake. She is intelligent with a sharp wit, but with little formal schooling, whereas he is a highly qualified middle-class academic. The screenplay (also written by Russell) opens up the action to bring in other characters, but Rita and Frank are still very much at the centre. In Willie Russell's original stage play, there were only two characters, Rita and her tutor Frank Bryant. (This is a scheme in Britain whereby adults can study for a degree at home).
